My Australian Journey #19: A really cool clock, a massive spider and Chinese New Year

Here it is, the last of my Sydney pictures before I board that flight and head up to far north Queensland. For those that are new to my blog I have already done all of this, I am just uploading my pictures in chronological order before moving to London next week.

Next week, how crazy. It is strange that two years ago I decided to travel to the other side of the world and in seven days I will be on another long haul flight back to Europe.

One thing I am looking forward to is being in the same time zone as my family. This made chatting very hard and the window of opportunity very small. Having a world clock on the screen helped a lot and speaking of clocks… how about this one I found in Sydney?

Ignore my creepy face in the reflection if you can. This was in a shop window if I remember rightly and it is pretty unique. I was wandering around the CBD before going to see the Chinese New Year celebrations on the harbour and as I was walking around one corner got the shock of my life.

Now I have seen a fair few spiders in my time here, mainly on the farms however I was not expecting to see one right in the city centre.

I don’t know exactly what species it is, but I do know it is the biggest one I have seen so far. And it was in the CBD! Proof that you’re not safe no matter where you are.

But onto less traumatic posts, the walk around Circular Quay during Chinese New Year was very fun, the displays all lit up made for more great photos.

I did see them setting these up during the day on the way to work, and this made my routine walk a little more fun.

What is your favourite shot? I think mine is the big transformer/bull thing or the one below. And I will leave you with this one, I have a nightshift tonight to look forward to and will need to start getting ready for it pretty soon.

    I tried to google “Australian spider varieties” to see if I could ID the spider, but the picture isn’t close up enough to get a good look. All I can tell you is it’s not a wolf spider. They’re thick like tarantulas. Fast too.

    1. Haha I did this too 😀 there are so many species too I am not sure how accurate we could be with this blurry shot. However, by your comment I am pleased it wasn’t a Wolf Spider!

      I did think that Pat, however was hoping the paving slab (a normal sized one, a couple feet wide or something) would help a little. I didn’t want to get any closer and get my foot in the picture haha.

    1. I believe that the smaller ones are the most deadly… which is a shame as these friendly ones look terrifying! But it is good to know that it probably isn’t venomous.

  9. Love the last photo! Was this actually on Chinese New Year or around the same time as their parade?

    Only curious as I landed in Singapore on my way to Sydney on the day of the Chinese New Year but still got to see the Chinese New Year Parade in Sydney a few days later. There wasn’t anything around Circular Quay commemorating the occasion so the photos above are quite surprising as it seemed like a much bigger effort than my trip haha.

    1. I cannot recall if I am honest, but I don’t think it was up for just one day. I could be wrong though as it has been so long now. I thought if anything they would have kept the displays up as long as the parades were on… it seems like a lot of effort so I hope it wasn’t just a one day thing!
