I’ve publicised my blog and I don’t know what to do now.

I have used this image recently but I don’t care, it works beautifully with a post about indecisiveness. I have made the decision to share my posts on other social media platforms as I felt it was the right time, however with this wonder whether I should post less frequently.

caleb-jones-131206-unsplash

I am currently blogging at least once a day and only being on one platform still requires a lot of free time as many of you know. The first hour of my day is spent responding to your comments, and I would never not respond to comments. Also taking time to look at my About Me and Introduce Yourself section’s and trying to check out blogs really makes time fly by. Then I upload a post and engage with you all on an evening. But this means that every post is pretty short in length and I am wondering if cutting down and maybe posting 3 or 4 times a week would be beneficial moving forward.

This would mean that I could maybe type more lengthy and in depth posts, however honestly fear I may not see as much engagement with followers if it is not as frequent. It has made such a difference to me posting daily and this is why I have kept it up. It also helps keep me motivated to carry on. But I know that many of you are on social media too and of course taking more time out here would mean I could see you all on Instagram and Twitter more.

I am really shit at multi tasking. I find it much easier to watch all the plates fall than to jog back and forth between them and keep them spinning. But if I take just a tiny step back on WordPress I think I could manage a little better. Or maybe I will just bite the bullet and keep up the pace and see if I can use social media more often. I’ll sleep on it.

How many of you also use social media? How do you balance the time and do you use certain platforms more than others? Let me know as I would greatly appreciate the feedback!

  1. I feel using social media to publicize your post is a great step . it introduces your blog to other people who use the internet . Instagram is a great platform also Facebook . I make use of social media to publicize my blog post and I get so much engagement on it . since I don’t have my domain yet social media helps me so you should try it out

    1. Thank you for your insight, I am glad it is working for you. It is a little strange to have connected to social media for the first time since having a blog, but I am pleased I have. I will see how it goes!

Thanks again for the comments and help with this.

  2. Hi Sam, it’s a tough balancing act that’s for sure! I could occupy whole days on WordPress. I have a linked facebook page @blueskydays365 and twitter account @HorsleyPoet
I also try to post my poetry/art on Pinterest. But it all takes time, too much time. Unless blogging is your life then compromise needs to be made.
I guess it comes down to what you want your blog to be, social media can be a valuable tool to promote yourself, just do what you can. Have a great day!

  3. Multitasking is hard for me also. I’m best at tackling the small jobs first, then big ones. I like twitter for social media best. you can only use 240 characters so posts are short and quick. Instagram is my next pick, as a photo does the talking with a short caption.

  5. If you build it, they will come. Whether you post one a day, once a week, once a month, what keeps people coming back will ultimately be your content. You can still engage with your followers without posting every day! You might even be able to engage *more*.

Like it or not, blogging such as this is an entrepreneurial venture. Take the risk, and if it doesn’t work, you know you have something to fall back on that does!

    Good luck!

  6. I have a fb page to promote my work but very few of my friends read the work that I post there. I get virtually no comments so it depends on your audiences interests. I get more traffic here because people are specifically looking for blog posts to read or watch. Cater to your followers as they will tell you what they are after in terms on where to go next. Also what do you want to get out of this blog. These key questions drive your content.

    1. Thank you for this. The good thing about a blog is that you will attract people that want to read your blog, where as a Facebook profile (unless it is a public page and not your personal profile) is full of friends that may not be interested in the same things as you. Have you set up a new Facebook page or do you just use your profile?

Thanks again for your help here!

      1. Maybe as it grows and more and more people will discover it that enjoy similar interests, and the engagement will increase. I wish the page all the best. I think for now I will stick to Instagram and Twitter and see how that goes and occasionally post to my Facebook profile through Instagram.

We can only try and see what happens I guess!

  7. I can so much relate. I use social media (Facebook, Instagram AND WhatsApp) to promote my blog. I can’t promote my blog efficiently and still blog every day. Like you, I’m not good at multitasking. That’s why I (try to) publish three posts every week. If you explore a new strategy and it doesn’t work for you, you can always fall back on the one you were using before. Or you can devise a much better strategy.

    Cheers!

    1. Thanks Obinna for your comments, I have never considered Whatsapp, has it been working well for you? You seem to be doing great so far and I may consider reducing my posts to three a week also. And like you said, I have something to fall back on if it doesn’t work.

      Thank you!

      1. WhatsApp is effective if you have many contacts. I share my posts in my statuses; I have a broadcast list for people who asked me to share the links to my posts (and other resource materials) with them. Another way WhatsApp helps is that I’ve got about six friends who promote my blog posts in their statuses and the group chats they belong to. WhatsApp might not rake in massive traffic like Facebook and Twitter, but it’s still an effective means of promotion. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  8. To help answer this question, I suggest you stop, take a deep breath, and consider your motive. Where do you want to go with your writing? Why are you writing? It is a human characteristic to want to connect with others. We crave applause, a hand on the shoulder; affirmation. We enjoy having lots of people follow our work. I do. You do. At the core of your timely question, I believe, is this: is the world better served by my writing in depth, or by my writing frequently, but less intensely. I suggest worrying less about your connections, and more with your content. An interesting account is the bible concerns a runner reporting a battle He ran, but when he arrived at his destination, he had no message, only this: “I saw a great tumult.” Wishing you well.

    1. You’re right. And today I am taking that deep breath!

Thank you for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it. I guess I am writing a) to keep motivated and as a therapy, and b) because I want to grow my blog in the hope I can eventually do this for a living, or at least part time. But to do this, I need to ensure the writing is good enough. For that reason I think I will dedicate a day to a blog post and the following day to engage with other bloggers and not publish. This will help give me that breather and consider everything.

Thank you again, I really appreciate your advice here.

  9. I am present just on wordpress and Linkedin. I guess, my blogging frequency at wordpress is extraordinary high because I use the feature “schedule” as well-filled pipeline for prepared posts. There are in average 10-20 posts scheduled. Of course, I also post spontaneously too, if I like…or change the order of posts in the pipeline.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Good use of the scheduling! I wish I had the motivation to type multiple posts up and schedule, but I have really struggled. But maybe if I cut down on posts per week I would be up for this. Having just two platforms sounds very manageable too whilst running a blog, great stuff!

Any advise ref. a blogging concept should depend on your target like more traffic or global coverage, less work etc…By the way, I had some time to create a pipeline because I was in hospital…A tactics not be recommended ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. Sam, Unlike your blog following , my following may be a quarter. I certainly cant blog daily, though i have at times in the past. Like most bloggers i work.

My point to this wonderful post of yours, is that social media works for publicising posts for sure. I have experimented with it on days i have no blog posts and it works.

The other point i wish to make, i am going be blogging once a week, and i know it is a risk, but i cant fit it in. I dont get seo so much. But, so how i might have done simething right because i get a few views/ visits based on search results.
But i only have 2000 followers not as many as you.

Anyway i think for someone who blogs daily you must get enuf search views that if you cut back only daily you might still do well, or may be better.

    Thanks for the follow.

    1. Thank you so much for the feedback here. You have a very solid blog following, you’re doing great! It is great to know social media is working for you too. Many bloggers here schedule posts, if you struggle for time is this something you could consider? It works for a lot of people that don’t have time to post often.

I think that I may cut back to three or four posts a week, and go from there. Again, thank you for your time here and help with my decisions. Cheers!

      1. Hi Sam, i have in the past scheduled upto two weeks in advance, but that was only 2 or 3 posts a week. There was a time a did daily only for a month and i scheduled. Scheduling in advance even if it a couple of post is extremely useful i find, as you can fit the rest of life in. Granted the posts are not fresh of the block, but it is a very peaceful non pressured way to blog, it takes the pressure off when you get into swing of it. The only problem with me was i would forget what i posted and when some commented had to remind myself..lol… but i want to get back to scheduled blogging even with my once a week schedule it is very useful.

Well all the best with what ever you decide.

Do you ever reschedule a blog post on the same day, it is a neat was of getting one blog post seen my more people in one day. But you can only reschedule the day you posted it if you want your social media links to work . Or if you dont care about social media then you can reschedule for another day. I wrote a post of different methods of resheduling , replublishing ..

Have a great day and week

  12. Honestly, although I publicize my blog on FB and Instagram, it does not do too much. But I may not be spending enough time on it. I think the key is to keep experimenting and see how things go. Not everything works for everyone.

    1. When Iโ€™ve published mine on fb, itโ€™s garnered very little interest. I have done it sporadically over the years and Iโ€™ve come to the conclusion that people often donโ€™t read long posts on fb. They only like pictures as those are the only posts that seem to be noticed. Instagram seems to be full of entrepreneurs but that too doesnโ€™t seem to drive traffic to where you want it to go even if you provide links. So itโ€™s completely dependent on others really.

      Liked by 3 people

      1. Oh they most definitely are because the reason most people visit a blog is just to kill time waiting for something like a bus etc
I think your Turkish posts may get a lot of traffic because they are different. Most people have never seen the Turkish language so thatโ€™s quite a novelty for them. Iโ€™m guessing here but itโ€™s fairly accurate at least I think so.

      2. Thatโ€™s a good plan. I think we all rely on social media too much and we end up procrastinating. I admire those that donโ€™t have any social media accounts but I could never do that. It provides a purpose (contact with friends abroad) so I continue to use it but not anywhere near as often as before as itโ€™s distracting and unnecessary as it takes over your life and makes you sad as your missing out on real life.

        Liked by 2 people

      3. It was like that for me too, but I think, now i have them but don’t spend more than 10-15 mins at most a day on them. In fact, I was able to go without any for a month. That radical challenge made me give up on them. Now I can use them in a more controlled way.

It is good to know from your experience how social media has or hasn’t got an affect on a blog and I will give it a go and try it out. 13. This is a great question — and I love reading all the comments. I barely post monthly. However, I write daily in journal. I’ve published my first book and I’m working on a second. I think someone above said it much better than I could — it really does depend on the purpose of your posting. I see people write ever day — some of it GREAT, some of it not so great. But their purpose is to be engaged daily and create and enjoy the community. I only post when I feel like I have something of value I feel comfortable sharing. My website and my blog posts are a place for ME to play and express myself. I love to share and engage, but it’s never been it’s soul purpose. I read blogs daily — and I rarely comment. This is a GREAT medium. Do what works for YOU. What makes you FEEL good, The rest will fall into place. And here’s another thought: Try posting less or posting more or advertising anywhere at all — and know, that in this world, if it doesn’t work for you, you can change it pretty easily! This life of ours is so short — spend as much time as possible doing whatever brings YOU the most joy. ๐Ÿ™‚

It is very true that it’s easy to change things if they aren’t working, and a big confidence booster moving forward. Thank you for this!!

  18. Prior to blogging I didn’t use FB much, but now I use it primarily as another place to put my blog posts. I just joined a travel blogging FB group, but honestly, my mind is boggled. There are all these rules and I have to attach “vertical pins” to each post and there are requirements for responding to X number of posts within a short time frame before it is “closed” by the administrators. Frankly, I don’t want a Pinterest account, and it’s all just too much bother at this point. As I point out in my post “How Blogging Has Hijacked My (Formerly Balanced) Life, I used to do get so much more done before blogging came along. I only post about once/week, but it takes hours (on and off during the week) from start to finish and I just don’t want to spend anymore time ignoring the increasingly dirty floors, the bunny that wants to snuggle, connecting with the husband, reading books, doing the crossword, working out, and on and on and on. Even this comment is cutting into my dishwashing time. (That’s OK – I don’t like dishwashing. :)) In short, going onto other platforms would cut into my “regular” life way too much, and I think I’d also feel too fragmented. You know, giving 50% to each of those platforms instead of 100% to my blog. BUT… lots of bloggers do it. You could always experiment with it and pull back if it’s not working. The world won’t stop spinning. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Haha, this really does take time away from our responsibilities! My blog takes up almost all my free time outside of work, and I could definitely do with cutting down. Thankfully I am in a hostel so dishwashing isn’t a thing and sadly I would not be allowed to bring a bunny in here.

Thank you for letting me know about joining FB groups, a really good idea! If there aren’t so many rules that is. But anyways, keep doing what you enjoy and like you said, we can always experiment and change things if it isn’t working.

Thank you, and congratulations on 100 followers!

  19. Hi, Sam! Congrats on publishing!

I have mine auto-connected for distribution to Facebook and Twitter and Tumblr for each post.
instagram is harder – I have to go make a specific post telling people what new content is available.
Pinterest requires a whole new skill set and dimensions of pictures/catchy title, etc.

If it’s hard to keep up and you want to step back a bit, try fewer days per week for posting? See how it goes. You can always ramp up again if you experiment and you don’t like it.

  20. Hi Sam, I only do IG, I have a page only for the blog and all I do is on my blog days, twice a week, I put a pic up and say what that days blog is about, and say link in bio, add some hashtags and all done. How many people read it from there I don’t know, but at least I have a precence there, and therefore on the internet other than WP for people to find me. If the wifi is behaving it only takes a few minutes. I dont do fb but like others say you can do that automatically. But again, for really engaged readers, they probably come more from WP. I personally prefer fewer posts as it is hard to keep up with daily posters and I prefer deeper content, but of course whatever works for you! All the best!

    1. Thank you, I admit I think I will prefer to post to IG, as I love pictures telling the story and it is open to potentially millions more readers. I will start to do this soon. Do you ever check the referrer section in your stats? It will say how many people are coming over from IG!

I will also consider posting less frequently in the hope it gives me more time to engage on other platforms. We will see.

Thank you so much for your feedback!

  21. People will follow authentic content. No matter how much you do, or donโ€™t advertise your blog. You need to find balance for yourself. That may mean less posting. Thatโ€™s not bad, may give more resonance to what you post.
It becomes a chore when you chase. It also may not produce your best work, or work youโ€™re most proud of.

  22. If you want to grow your blog further, social media is a must.
I think you should create one piece of pillar content (as Gary Vaynerchuk puts it. Seriously, check him out on Youtube) like a blog post, and take different parts of it and post it as microcontent for other platforms.
So make a blog, then use quotes from there to put along with Instagram photos and Facebook. Then use Twitter to sort of highlight how your day was with photos and snippets from the blog. Snapchat could be used to highlight little moments that you can’t mention using words and you could, possibly, post the blog on Tumblr and LinkedIn as well.
Again, I’m not a social media expert, and I don’t do everything I mentioned above myself. If you want to expand, just one tip. make sure you research what kind of things people expect from different social media platforms, like Twitter for new-like stuff and Instagram for quick entertainment and Snapchat for stories, and tailor your microcontent for that specific audience demographic across each platform.
    Best of luck!

    1. Thank you so much for the advice, I really like the sound of micro content and it seems like the best way to add to other social platforms. Twitter gives us little choice with the word count anyway! But I will see how posting on other sites goes with this in mind, and I will look into what people want on each platform as this is interesting to me.

Thank you for the comments and advice!

    1. I have found that if I am not in control I am not enjoying it, and therefore don’t want to be controlled by media tools! I love watching my blog grow and for that reason I am happy to look at other platforms, I just want to have fun doing so. As soon as it seems like a chore and a bore I will reconsider.

Thanks for the comments on this ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. It’s tricky finding the balance. I generally only post once a week on WordPress which means I’ve still got time to use other social media throughout the week. I don’t think I’d manage posting here more regularly and juggling other social media plus life outside of the internet haha.

There’ll be pros and cons to each, I guess it really comes down to which platforms you enjoy and what you want out of them.

    1. I am finding it difficult so far xD however I have had a busy couple days so I will see how it goes. Thanks Jason, it is good to read how others find it so I appreciate your insight to this.

  25. For someone that only set up her blog two days ago, this is really interesting to read – and the comments too ๐Ÿ™‚ I have initially started off here and also created an Instagram account where I can publicise my posts by using relevant hashtags but I’ve been wondering what else I can do. I don’t really want to link it to my personal Facebook account, but I’m thinking it may, finally, be time to try and embrace Twitter. Lots to think about…

    1. Lots to think about, but like many bloggers have told me it is all about trial and error and if something isn’t working, you can always go back ๐Ÿ™‚

Each platform has huge potential audiences, it just depends if you can balance the time between them and which you prefer to use. Also, the more time you spend engaging with others, the more interest people will have on your blog. Sometimes it isn’t about spreading your blog, but reaching out to other bloggers!

      1. So very true ๐Ÿ™‚ I have spent a lot of my working life in customer and client based roles and I think that making people feel important (which of course we all are!) is so vital when it comes to building relationships. I look forward to reading more of your blog and your travels – and thank you for the follow on Instagram too ๐Ÿ™‚

      2. It is nice to feel valued and makes us actually want to engage with the person opposite us! Thank you for the kind words and I really appreciate you stopping by ๐Ÿ™‚
