It’s a small world after all

For the second time in two days, I have asked English people where they are from in the UK here in Brisbane. Yesterday a girl told me that she was from Lincoln, but after telling her I am from Durham she told me she once lived in Bishop Auckland (a town within County Durham), the very place I was born. Today, a girl checked into my hotel and after asking where she was from she replied ‘Bishop Auckland’. Whaaaaaaaat.

Now these aren’t people I have met before, which was the topic of this post, however they are from the same town as me. A town a world away from here. Now I am not sure if this is sheer coincidence, or after my post I have started asking more and more people where they are from and getting more interesting results. But I am not kidding. Twice in two days people have mentioned my home town to me and it is just strange.

The most recent one was surprising because her accent would never have made me guess. I was simply curious. She was born there but lived in Cairns here in Australia and has done for over a decade. The best part was that when I was talking to her about Cairns, a colleague walked over and said ‘Did I hear Cairns? I’m from there!’ They talked for a while about where exactly in Cairns before I asked about the English accent. That’s when I found out.

Two people in two days from the same small area of land in northern England as I am from, making it seem like the town with a population of just over 16,000 is much bigger than it is. I guess it shows that speaking to people you never have some has great benefits. It can start some fascinating conversations.

    1. I lived in Durham for 10 years, my dad still lives there. I used to live on the Newton Hall Estate. Did you have a favourite pub in Durham? I used to drink in the Dun Cow because they had Castle Eden ale. Yes, it’s a small world.

      1. Haha, that’s cool! I didn’t spend too much time in Durham as I am from 20 minutes outside of it, however I have heard of the Dun Cow. I don’t think I could say I have a favourite pub there as I was never a regular to any, however maybe I will try the Dun Cow next time I am there!

  1. Not nearly as epic, but I have twice encountered much younger attendees of the same high school as me. One was literally my co-Teaching Assistant in 2010. The high school was in the Philadelphia suburbs, but we were meeting outside Boston.

  2. It shows that although as we see the world as big, it actually is quite small in some respects. We met a couple that had just started a business in eastern Canada. Found out they come from a town about an hour away from where we live and had visited our little town on numerous occasions.

Really love your blog. So, I nominated you for The Sunshine Blogger Award.
