Speak to someone new.

Last night was a very unexpected one*. I met a girl in the city that I happened to start talking to, and before I knew it I was invited onto the guest list of a boat party with a friend. A boat party with a rapper named Bow Wow performing.

I know some of you will be asking who he is, and admittedly I had heard of him but didn’t know any of his songs.

But this isn’t what this post is about. It is about why occasionally stepping out of our social circle and speaking to someone knew can be a good thing.

It can be the best thing we have ever done, once upon a time your partner was a stranger that you were terrified to speak to at the bar, but did. The job you love doing was once for a company that you almost ran away from the day of the dreaded first interview. If we didn’t make that scary first move, we wouldn’t be where we are today.

As I get older, I am purposefully trying to leave the comfort zone. I have a long way to go, for example a skydive is at the top of my bucket list but I cannot see myself in the near future jumping out of a plane. But maybe I will one day, and I know there are some people that will benefit greatly by speaking to someone different today.

If I didn’t say hello to her yesterday, we wouldn’t have been able to talk about my life in Europe and her life back home in South America. I wouldn’t have heard about where she works and that she was able to get us on the guest list for a boat party happening later that evening. I wouldn’t have went to the party and had a great time with a friend that I was able to bring along.

Talk to people. You never know where it might take you!

*I often plan a post the day I take the photo or think of the post idea, start the draft and publish it the next day. I had to mention this as I posted about taking night time walks yesterday and didn’t want to confuse my readers as to where I was, or state I was in two different places at the same time. That was drafted the day before and posted yesterday, and the boat party was last night. Just to clear that up.

‘ I stood next to someone at uni to get out of the sun, and now we’re on the verge of starting a lettuce appreciation club’
A lettuce appreciation club?! Love that you just wrote that. And what a great first line, so original!
Please do a blog about it- only once your work is done though!!!

      • Yup, a lettuce appreciation club! It’s still in the works though, the student union won’t fund us yet, we need, in their words, “more than simply appreciation”. So we’re working our way through the loopholes. We expect every freshman to be presented with a lettuce to take care of starting next fall! Lettuce eating competitions and a formal Constitution printed on cabbage leaves are already on the cards. Just by sheer coincidence, a smaller town not all that very far from where we live is called Cabbagetown.
I’ll definitely blog about it real soon! Lettuce lovers can be-‘leaf’ in us 😉

    • I like to think so, however this can have the opposite effect on some people, who become very set in a way of living and makes it hard to break free. I guess it depends on individual experiences we have along the way that may trigger a change 🙂
