I found this on the counter of a breakfast place up in Cairns.
After long nights partying and waking up early because of the heat, it is safe to say the coffee I consumed up in Queensland was a need. I do admit that I have it occasionally for social reasons, sometimes regretting the caffeine kick.
Why do you have yours?
I quit smoking & alcohol years ago……I WILL NOT give up my coffee!!!
Coffee is the better option out of the three I am sure π
I don’t miss smoking but I do miss my glass of wine, beer, or rum, etc. I just can’t mix any with my meds.
Well done for the others though … check you out! So many people try and fail to give up…
Love my coffee. That first cup in the morning is the reason I go to bed at night. I have a sign in my kitchen that says “Hand me the coffee and no one gets hurt.” -Jill
I may need to borrow that sign if I may…. π
Of course. π
I donβt drink coffee but I am a soda addict
Ah I have really tried to cut down on soda, I had it a lot growing up and I just can’t forget how much sugar is in there. I have it as a treat once in a while if I feel I have deserved it π
Coffee is a necessity that can’t be compromised. We have been travelling for 7 years straight and I have found I can do without air-conditioning, hot water and television, but not having access to a hot cup in the morning puts that area off limits for me. No cream or sugar necessary in my cup. The rise of people who tie up lines with silly orders of frothy milk, whipped cream, chocolate and ice in their coffee has caused many of my days to get off to a bad start.
There seems to be an endless list of ways coffee can be made and what is included in them recently! I hear new names for drinks every time I am in a coffee shop. I think for me it would have to be air con first (I get really agitated in the heat) and then coffee. But coffee is a very close second!
Brewed coffee! A necessary luxury for sanity. π
Agreed! I would dread to think of how apocalyptic our world would be if there was a coffee shortage haha
Hahaha! Apocalyptic really! πππ
Well as someone who doesn’t actively drink coffee, but who drinks tea on a regular basic, I would have to say my beverage consumption is performed on a “Want” basis. I can live without it and occasionally like the effect it has, but I don’t feel it’s an “essential” part of my day let alone life. Great post to think about
My dad loved tea, and over time I went from being a tea lover to a coffee lover back and forth for a period of years. I just feel with really early mornings coffee is a stronger pick me up. But it is good that it isn’t something you need to rely on π
I donβt drink coffee as my grandma told me it would make me short, however, when Iβm grouchy, my students suggest I have a cup of teaπ
Haha, are you short? Thankfully I wasn’t told that, as I was short growing up. Maybe it was the coffee that provided me a growth spurt! :p
I am extremely short. Maybe I should have drank coffee!!!!
I drink tea every day as well, & I am 5 ft. nuthin…..hmmmmmm…….
Hmmm maybe there is something to this?
Well at my age, I don’t care about my height, but I’m stickin’ with my 2 cups of tea, & 2 cups of coffee a day. I don’t even get the ”shrimp” or ”short sh*t” comments anymore.
Iβve never touched coffee and Iβm not going to grow at this point so I may as well stick with my tea habit
If I don’t get my daily dose of coffee, my head aches. So I guess it’s a medical need. π
You aren’t alone in this xD
It is a need for me, but more because of a physiological dependency
I think the poster above was made with you in mind then! :
We all need a vice, coffee is a pretty good vice to have
It is better than most, that’s for sure!
I am in the process of trying to eliminate the blood from my caffeine stream. It’s a long slow process, but it has to be done…
If you achieve this, please let me know! I bet nothing feels better than a good detox and getting that poisonous blood out of your system!
It’s a lifelong struggle but with the aid of a gofundme page and a charity single, I’m sure it will happen…
A necessary start to my day…and if I miss it in the morning, I’ll definitely have it in the afternoon so I guess a need? Although would it be selfish to say I do drink it socially too? If I’m abroad traveling, I definitely get caffeine withdrawal symptoms but thank God coffee shops are a global thing!
I am also happy that they are global. I don’t think it’s selfish, as I too drink it socially. If there was a major shortage, maybe :p
I only ever have one to wake me up in the morning. Just a hot drink more than anything. As for my second cup it has to be something special. A good cup of coffee since my one cup a day is of the instant variety.
For me the first one is usually instant, as I am too tired to appreciate it anyways haha. I save my fancy drinks for later in the day so I can really enjoy them π
Itβs a need for me every morning… to wake my soul up π
I feel you!
The picture cracked me up. Definitely a need with me too.I get headaches if I miss my morning coffee.
It seems a lot of people are like you and get headaches! I don’t suffer them, unless I am hungover. Then, I definitely need coffee to keep going.
It’s a need. The first cup of coffee in the morning is like drinking happiness, it fills me up.
I can relate to this. I need to have a cup to lift my spirits in the morning.
I think itβs more of a want for me, though I may be grumpy without it. I donβt get the headaches if I donβt have a cup (or 3). I do enjoy 2 cups a day nearly everyday though. π
It seems many people get headaches from not having a cup, you are lucky not to get them! Two cups is probably a good limit π
Hmmm…good question, I never thought about it. Probably, my coffee is more of a habit. I will be okay without my morning coffee, I will not have a bad mood just because I did not have a coffee in the morning. I also donΒ΄t want that much either to have a coffee every morning. But I do drink coffee almost every morning. It’s like, my body automatically takes me to the kitchen and makes me my coffee. π
I picture you walking like a zombie to the kitchen as you make one haha. Or as zombie you makes you one, as you clearly aren’t in control at this stage :p
Sort of like that, LOL. π
A good strong tea is my need. I think coffee is over rated
You see I just don’t drink tea much anymore. I think it would be a good substitute for coffee some days when I feel crazy from the coffee. I think it is after I decided to give up sugar, coffee tastes nicer for me without sweeteners. It is nice to chat to a tea lover in the middle of all these coffee fans! :p
My case is the same but just substitute coffee with tea :p I occasionally drink coffee when I get tired of drinking tea all the time.
I used to think of it as a need, but itβs definitely a want for me. Just love the flavor of it
At least you know it is a luxury more than a necessity. I feel many of us may be in denial about how much we need it xD
I am sure I wouldn’t die without my coffee, but my friends like me better when I have has ‘several’ cups before they see me. . .
It seems like you need it, for them :p But several cups? Really? Haha
Sam, don’t tell anyone, but it is more than several cups. . two or three pots a day. Yet I sleep like a baby at nights. . .
You are a new natural wonder of the world!!
When I was working, coffee would get me through the day no matter if I worked 8 hours or 12 hours like I did on the weekends on my last job. I needed it. Now that I’m retired and have health issues , I can’t drink coffee as much as I want to. So now it’s become a want that I don’t want every day, and that’s okay.
My mum is in the same boat, she has to really cut down on caffeine. I think it is a good thing though, I know I have too much caffeine at times and would probably feel better with a cut back.
I used to love my morning coffee but I had to give it up for tea. Jasmine pearl tea to be exact. Iβm still a coffee snob though and the beans I have in my house are always from small, local coffee shops. On the occasion that I do drink it, I like it black so it has to taste good naked π
Haha I wonder if people know what you mean when you say you like to drink your coffee naked xD I haven’t tasted many flavoured teas, I am probably missing out…
I never acquired a taste for coffee. I remember in college ordering one of those “fancy drinks” with chocolate, caramel, etc. in it and taking one sip and handing it to my roommate saying that she could drink it as it still tasted like coffee to me. I do love the smell though. My husband drinks a cup each morning to “wake up” so I’d say it’s somewhat of a need for him though once in awhile he’ll have it later in the day at which point I think it’s just a want.
Yeah the first one is always a need, after that is probably turns into a want π I cannot drink many of the fancy ones, too sweet for me. It is interesting to read that you love the smell just not the taste!
As a primary school teacher it is a need for me, without it I cannot get through the day.
I remember all of my primary school teachers drank coffee, maybe it was because they needed it to keep us all in order! I am sure you could answer that :p
Hahahaha yes without it we do not have the will and patience needed for certain children :p
I NEED a cup if I’ve had a very stressful morning (otherwise it’s tea first thing to wake me up), but otherwise, it’s definitely for pleasure!
The more I read from tea drinkers like yourself, the more I feel like switching to tea on a morning to see how it goes. It could be a refreshing change and wake me up without making me go from sleepy to hyper, as it does on the odd occasion.
I guess part of the issue is how we define “need”. At least for me, I would say it is a need. One of my medicines causes drowsiness, and I can’t focus or stay awake without caffeine.
For you it seems to definitely be a need. Some of us exaggerate the ‘need’ aspect, although at 6.30am it is a need for anyone!
Nope….6:30 a.m. I’m sleepin’ & look out if someone dares wake me up if there isn’t a bloody good reason…..fire, flood, etc!
To be honest I never thought about it.Sometimes I just feel like having coffee. With regards to hangover,I prefer pepper soup.lol
Soup…. you have made me really crave soup today! Must find soup…
Hahahah. Have you had the soup yet?
I didn’t, I fancied wonton soup but I only found sushi. So I had that!
I drink coffee because I LOVE it, but since that love is indulged daily and I prefer espresso style, I pay dearly with a headache if I’m unable to get some in a day. So I’m afraid I’m addicted and it has become a need. Part of why I enjoy it is very social. My local baristas have become my genuine friends, and the warmth of the brew is added to by fun and comforting exchanges at the shops. I also get much of my best writing and editing done on my novels at coffee shops. So they are an integral part of my daily life. My lifestyle would change if I cut out coffee.
I typed up a post actually about going to coffee shops to blog whilst my wifi was down, I enjoy being out and about and the buzz from the many people coming and going. I am pleased you enjoy writing there too! It sounds like both a want and a need for you (with headaches being withdrawal symptoms) hopefully you aren’t an addict though :p
I know the headache means at least a slight addiction. If I suffer it for part of a day I’m free of it, so not too much of a monkey on my back. π
AM coffee… definitely a need. Afternoon coffee (with whiskey) more recreation.
Always good to add extra ingredients into the mix π
It’s a need, no doubt about it!!
You know the score! π
I literally just posted a blog on coffee and I honestly think itβs like everything else. Good in moderation. Otherwise whatβs the point??πππ to be honest even the air we breathe is technically killing us so Iβm sure coffee could as well. Coffee is just so good though!! Anyways interesting post!! Love it !!πππ
Thank you for the kind words! Coffee is definitely good in moderation. Too little and I don’t know where I am on the morning, too much and… well the same really XD
For night owls, coffee is a necessity! (Or for those who stay up late and need a cuppa to get the illusion that theyβre functioning, anyway.)
I have a friend whoβs downing three cups a day (four for variety at times). No sugar, pure undiluted filter coffee (with all the patience to brew it thrice a day), and I can only wonder how he does it, because thatβs incredible! We are trying to get him to slow down, though. He says his concentration wavers without a coffee at five hour intervals!
That is pretty impressive! Maybe if he cuts down, his concentration with improve with less coffee? Just a thought, although you know him better than me π
It’s definitely a conscious effort… on our part, at least! I wonder what the world record is? π
All I need is a cup in the morning and another in the afternoon to optimize my daily tasks.
I have cut down recently to one a day on a morning. I may need to up that to two a day again after some recent farm work shifts!
π I covered similar thing on my blog! You might not agree with what I put though haha always an interesting question
I provided my opinion on the post π
