I had a great day yesterday. I watched the highlights of the latest SpaceX launch, the Falcon Heavy. This included a Tesla car with a mannequin in the drivers seat being launched into orbit. What a time to be alive.
The footage can be seen here, the 20 minute mark is where you will see the action unfold. This action includes a seemingly perfect test flight, synchronized landings of the side boosters and that Tesla Car with a mannequin in the driver seat blasting Starman by Bowie.
On the YouTube channel, the following description is provided:
When Falcon Heavy lifts off, it will be the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two. With the ability to lift into orbit nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 lb)—a mass greater than a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel–Falcon Heavy can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest operational vehicle, the Delta IV Heavy, at one-third the cost. Falcon Heavy draws upon the proven heritage and reliability of Falcon 9.
Its first stage is composed of three Falcon 9 nine-engine cores whose 27 Merlin engines together generate more than 5 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, equal to approximately eighteen 747 aircraft. Only the Saturn V moon rocket, last flown in 1973, delivered more payload to orbit. Falcon Heavy was designed from the outset to carry humans into space and restores the possibility of flying missions with crew to the Moon or Mars.
Just reading this gets me all fired up. In a world in which we are constantly hearing about the crazy things Trump says and and reading about the latest tragedy to strike a community, it is great to read about an event that is nothing but beneficial for humanity. We are in the early stages of becoming a multi-planet species. How can this be boring to some people? It blows my mind that this doesn’t blow everyone’s mind. But we are all different with different interests.
An example of this was seen today on my social media. Someone posted the following onto Facebook:
I would hate to have this much money I could waste such vast amounts on shit space missions. #nooneisbothered
Surely it isn’t healthy to be this pessimistic. Skeptical is good, as we need to be very skeptical about what we are told in life. But to make such a statement is to not bother researching the thing you are criticising but remain motivated enough to criticise it anyway. Lazy and pessimistic go hand in hand, and can be a dangerous downward spiral that is hard to get out of. How many people on earth have the ambition shown in the video… To be wealthy enough to not just live a great lifestyle but dedicate this wealth to improving humanity. I genuinely feel Elon Musk is one of the few people that are truly interested in improving our species in a very selfless manner, finding gaps in our systems and looking to fill those gaps. One of the gaps being a one planet species and the issues with this.
It could be true that #nooneisbothered. Thankfully that doesn’t seem the case, the video is currently number one on Youtube’s trending. My response would be #bebothered. Life is too average to not look up to the people that have incredible vision and motivation, using money in productive ways. To be pessimistic here is to be lazy. There is no skill involved in being pessimistic, and we all have skills. It is easier to be negative than use these skills to be productive, although productivity will be much more rewarding in the long run.
To infinity!
Great post Sam! Humans as a species are explorers. I am very excited to see these steps into space. To Infinity.

I loved that he included references to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy 😀
“Don’t panic!” and a towel in the trunk :p

I didn’t even get the reference as I did not know it was in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy… But I’m glad I do now! Thanks haha.

Yes its so amazing and to all the pessimists and people saying bad things about it i feel like saying…’and what exactly have you done in your life of that order of magnitude or importance?’

Found and followed God 🙂 I am so far removed from being a pessimist however money spent on boys’ toys when there are starving and sick people is surely wrong in any rational human’s view.

What is a boys toy, a rocket being tested that will eventually lead populating another planet? If so plenty of money should be put into funding these ‘boys toys’! xD
Also, what’s the point in following God if he cannot help the sick? I think asking Elon Musk is asking the wrong person…

There is no place like Earth – the “planets” are wandering stars. Do you not think enough damage has been done already by man?

I feel it’s probably just people that help people and God gets a free pass. If an infinitely powerful God was helping, our world would be pretty incredible by now. I thank Elon for helping do Gods work, as best as a human can do it of course.

Yeah that’s true… People like to say they aren’t impressed whilst not making a similar effort. I used to be like that, a little more pessimistic and realised that I wasn’t doing anything close to what others were doing. If I want to complain, I need to at least put in more effort!

I remember hearing someone say that the reason some people are amazing are because some others are not, or something. I guess it’s similar then that some people not bothering leads others to really care!
Either way, he’s a great guy with great interests: he’s into physics, he’s into the future and has great taste in music!
It also reminds me of this astronaut on a space station who’d once tweeted that Starlight sounded amazing from up in space. 🙂

The quote is true, although I haven’t heard that before. His taste in music is another reason to like him, and I need to know who said Starlight sounded great from space! I bet it does, I’m imagining it now…

It was incredible, great to see something that looks like it’s out of a movie actually happening in real life!

I mean, I get what you’re saying. Although I have zero interest in any of this, and would rather the money perhaps go to helping our own planet than focusing on another, I agree with the thought that pessimism can lead to laziness. It’s a shame, because the more optimistic you are, the more active you are to an extent to create change and develop. Thoughtful post – I like it. 🙂

Musk is also doing plenty to improve our own planet too, it just so happens he wants to do things in space as well. I like what you said about being optimistic, very true 🙂 I’m glad you liked the post!

Haha, true. If I had as much money as him I’d probably spend it extravagantly too (but on my own little non-space hobby). The man can afford it – much like the rest of us non billionaires spend our spare money on our own hobbies and treats, he’s just doing it with his 😂 he seems pretty cool, I admit.

I’m just glad he is sharing it and putting it into society instead of hiding in a castle somewhere and keeping it all for himself haha.

…and Beyond! I might add. 🙂 I love space missions and humanity’s unquenchable thirst to explore and grow. I have some sympathy for those that say we should put the money toward immediate human needs like hunger, etc. But it’s short-sighted, and I agree it harbors a type of skepticism, to only support things that are immediately and physically practical. Humans definitely need food, shelter and warmth, but it’s undeniable that we also need hope to thrive. Nothing inspires hope in me more than these huge space projects and the enormous amount of inspiration, skills and co-operation it takes to launch them. Thanks for the inspiring post today!

And beyond indeed! We should be happy for anyone that is able to help us progress in any way we can… I mean if I saw someone feeding the homeless, I wouldn’t complain that they weren’t working to help injured animals instead. If they are helping in some way, why not get behind them?!
Thanks for you kind and inspirational words 🙂

Why dont we leave god out of it…indeed if there is one to waste time contemplating. There will always be wars and poor people who need help and depending on which charity you prefer to support that work will never be done but again we come to the bigger picture of what humanity can achieve as a whole sum and total in terms of interplanetary travel. Humans and indeed animals will always need help but applying guilt to this equation is just bonkers.

Sorry to have the above conversation on your above comment. I was hoping to make a post purely non God related but he was brought into it! I am a actively trying to make posts that anyone can relate to, although when someone makes a statement or asks a question I do like to add my thoughts. We will never be productive if we don’t put the effort in ourselves and if we complaint that Musk is wasting time in space instead of focusing on earth, a great deal of his passion and achievements will go to waste. We should be proud more than negative!

Dont apologise no need. I shouldnt have gotten annoyed here. Like you I feel passionately that voyages and adventures into the unknown are so inspiring. I think despite the cost its like a gateway to a new reality, literally a new world. Perhaps thats incredibly naive to think that way. When the world is turning to shit its really important to believe in something bigger

It’s certainly frustrating when a post leads to a debate more than conversation. And yeah, it is very inspiring, definitely not naive to look to the future and to push human capabilities to new limits!

I question if those who are negative towards Elon and his company’s success even know everything Elon has done to help improve humanity. He’s not just some rich guy sending his toys into space. He genuinely cares about the planet and improving it and I wish Trump hadn’t pulled the US from the Paris Climate Agreement or else Elon would still be on his business advisory council. Heck I wish Elon could just replace him as president. I think if most people had even a fraction of the motivation that man does we would see lots of amazing things being done. He is one of my biggest inspirations.

I totally agree. Nothing winds me up more than hearing that he is a ‘boy playing with his toys’. So far from the truth! He is a great inspiration to me too.

I love our diversity, we need it or we will become very boring very fast! This post in particular was aimed at those that have their own opinion, but use it to be negative towards a person that is doing very positive things. I like diversity when it has a healthy goal or place in society 🙂

Unfortunately, there are lots of people with a negative think…I believe that it is very important to express our opinion, above all when it is possible. And you are right, our diversity can represent us or improve us and it is better when it has a good place or healthy goal in society. Anyway, do not worry, I think we will not be boring very fast.
