I’m not talking about the city sightseeing bus. I’m talking about the great high-rise behind it. I was walking by (around the time I was posting about the Sirius Building) and it made me think about the daily benefits Sydneysiders have over tourists, only to probably take them for granted.
Think of the views from this building, the Gateway Plaza. The people that are too busy to gaze out of the window and the distances you could see from the highest floor. It is a shame to think some of the tallest buildings in any city are the ones that are built for workers. Now I understand that these buildings wouldn’t be there if there wasn’t a demand for office space, there are more people in a city trying to earn a living than people visiting it on any day. There are towers that have tourists in mind such as the Sydney Tower Eye, so tourists aren’t exactly getting a bad deal. But what if every building had an observation deck for people to use? If one floor was designated for those looking for a different view of the city, for a small fee would this earn the company more money than an office full of employees? I am sure someone out there could do the maths. Maybe they have and that is why most high-rises don’t have them.
So that is my thought for the day. Have you had similar thoughts? Are you a city bus tour kind of person or a selfie from the top of the cities tallest building- kind of person?
I am not the best with heights, however I also get travel sick. I think a great view over the city wins for me with some great memories of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and the Empire State Building in New York City. Very impressive buildings and opportunities I won’t forget.
One Chance to See the World 
Getting on a bus & riding a route is a great way to see a new city/town for a cheap price. Then you can narrow down the places you want to get to for a closer look.

Going up to Sydney in April for a few days. The opera and a play. perhaps a museum a ride on the ferrys…I hate heights…I always fear Im going to fall…

I wonder about that sometimes… Mumbai is known as the city of dreams, so many people would give anything to get here, try to make a life for themselves, but I can’t get myself to see it that way.
Maybe someday I’ll realise I took the big city experience for granted. Maybe not.

The grass often seems greener on the other side 🙂 It is like Europe for me, I miss it when I am not there. The little things that I didn’t realise I would miss until they are no longer around me, so I can certainly relate.

Growing up near Chicago, I went up in the Sears Tower a few times. While it was a neat view I actually preferred the buildings a little further behind the tower so your view could get one of the most famous Chicago buildings in it. I love going up in buildings because you can see some of the hidden yet amazing architecture. There are a lot of hidden costs with running an observation deck though. There is more maintenance fees on the elevators, there is additional liability insurance, and there is an additional fee of hiring staff to run it. I don’t know if those are the case all over but one company I worked for was briefly considering putting a cafe on the roof to allow better views of our lakefront office. That idea was scrapped really quickly when certain costs got thrown around

Ah, thank you for commenting with this! It is nice to get a little insight as to what the costs may involve. I would love to visit the Sears Tower (is that called the Willis Building now?) although if you recommended another building instead I would listen to you 🙂

My favorite is the Hancock building and they recently added a new tilt feature (which looks terrifying). Kemper building is another favorite one. Sears Tower is now the Willis Tower but most people from Il or Chicago still say Sears

It definitely has charm! I grew up an hour south of it and loved visiting it. Make sure you get some good pizza, hot dogs, and all other American staples

Only one thing is better that “HIGH PLACES”, and that is a helicopter ride.
