I really like this about Sydney. Due to the huge expanse of water that the city is built around, many people take these Yellow Water Taxis to and from various points around the Harbour. These are yellow cabs that resemble those in New York City, except they float. I like the yellow cabs, we don’t get them in the UK and when I see one I know I’m on holiday. It also reminds me of my times in NYC. I remember the first time I jumped in a Yellow Cab over there, the driver claimed he didn’t know where Times Square was. It was either our accent or he was taking us for a ride- literally- for a higher fare. I prefer to believe it was the accent, despite his obvious experience with passengers from all over the world.
Funnily enough, back on dry land in Sydney there is one taxi company that uses cars that resemble London black cabs. I haven’t seen too many of these here, the main taxis you will find are white and don’t really stand out in any unique fashion. I don’t know if these London cabs cost more or have a back story, or if they are simply trying to be different.
Update: I found some nice info on the front page of their website, https://www.londontaxis.com.au.
They are made back in England! Who knew.
Many cities have help creating a unique identity with the style of cabs they use. It would make sense to have them stand out in some way considering they are one of the most popular methods for people to get around. Yellow Cabs often appear on postcards and souvenirs from the Big Apple, and Black Cabs the same with London. How many other cities have cabs that are as recognisable? Did somewhere else start the yellow taxi trend first? There aren’t too many cities that I have traveled to that have taxis truly stand out as much, but I’m sure there are more.
I can’t believe I’ve typed a blog post about taxis.

This was interesting to read! In my country, we do not have such special colour or something other regarding a taxi. It is good enough when your driver is not swearing all over the journey and you safely came to the needed place 🙂 And cars are awful, sometimes it looks like it gone through tough time. I can’t even describe it.

Thanks for the post. It is interesting to see what taxis are adopted around the world but can we have a picture of a White Sydney cab next time. Or are they really so anonymous that they are hard to photograph?

Haha I didn’t think there would be any demand to see a white Sydney cab! But I was wrong. Next time I will be more thorough with my coverage and add everything I can. Thanks for keeping me moving forward 🙂

Believe it or not……I knew that. We had a documentary on tv about the London Taxi, & the history.
Our taxis in our little city are white with black lettering for their name.
My son’s town has brilliant green taxis……Emerald Taxi by name.
Vancouver has yellow as well as other colours.

I bet it was an interesting watch, as London cab drivers need to know an impressive number of streets! I think it is called ‘The Knowledge’? Maybe you heard about that on the documentary.
Green taxis are one I haven’t encountered before, I bet they are easy to spot!

Yes, knowing all the streets & how to get there by the best, & shortest routes.
That brilliant green is unique for a vehicle, so you definitely see when your taxi arrives among the traffic.

We don’t have cabs that stick out, but you’re right that they’re part of a city’s identity as riding in a NYC yellow cab and a black London cab are both on my list. My city has water taxis though that are very cool and convenient

I hope you get to do both! I don’t think I have ever been in a London Black Cab despite visiting a couple of times, shameful! I haven’t been on a water taxi yet, but that is one that is definitely on my list!

I’m from Cameroon and we only use yellow taxis. Perhaps the white taxis you saw were Ubers? 😅💞

Haha, definitely not Ubers! I have learned that if the car has no taxi company name on it (or looks like your jumping into a random persons car) then it is an Uber xD
