New Years resolutions are funny. There is no other time in our lives that we let ourselves down as much as we do at 00.00am on the 1st of January. For those that do fully commit to them, well done. Sadly, the majority of us mere mortals simply do not last a month. I’m the perfect example.
Your New Years Resolution should be to not have one. Well, not that we shouldn’t have a desire to change, but to not make yourself a promise that it will start on a certain date in the future. The 21st of December is a better time to make that change you have always wanted because it is right now. If you aren’t excited and motivated enough to do it today, it is highly unlikely you will be in the future. The future consists of too much time to find excuses.
This is what I have done and it has made a big difference personally. Instead of promising myself to make the change at a later date, I try to do it here and now. This doesn’t always work for me, but if I tell myself I will go to the gym Monday next week after work, I probably won’t. Instead, I go at the earliest possible time. The same with blogging. The same with doing something I fear. I am not entirely consistent with this but it has certainly helped me to achieve things I probably wouldn’t have if I didn’t decide to bite the bullet and get on with it.
So yes, today is a much better day to make the change. If it is to lose weight or excersise more, how much of a difference can be made before the new year? If it is to learn guitar, how many chords will you be able to lock down before a great song comes out in January that you would love to play along to? There are ten days left of the year, ten days is a hell of a lot of time to gain a head start. This ferry is pretty slow that I captured before boarding earlier… But where will it be in ten days if it just kept on going?
Probably New Zealand. Progress for sure!

Totally. Can’t count the number of times i felt defeated looking back at what I’ve not achieved over the past year ( multiple failed resolutions) and the new year doesn’t look like I’m going to be better at all haha..the vicious cycle of wanting to be better and then realised im shit at being better ๐

Haha well I think you will eventually get bored of that feeling and will get better ๐ That is what happened to me anyway. I was tired of wanting to travel but not putting any effort into saving, so I just started to save and didn’t give up. Then I bought flights, then I made it here, then I felt better about myself and it motivated me to do other things too! Sometimes one change opens a bunch of other doors ๐

Yes! And the more often it is done, the easier it is everyday. I found that out after taking a break from working out, it is so hard to get back into it. That is why I try to blog every day too! Although I love doing it, one day away from my blog turns to two days and so on…

No kidding. we have stopped making resolutions in my house. And I still don’t get on that darn bike I bought then stopped riding 2 Christmases ago!

Haha, do it today. If that doesn’t work, do you have a favorite album or something? When I cannot be bothered to go to the gym, I try to combine it with listening to a podcast or album that I probably would have done if I didn’t go. Combining the two stimulates me and makes it more bearable.

Well, what do you know. A buddy of mine has a mountain bike and today we went riding along a trail in the park!! Not quite the rider, nor bike, nor TIRES to ride on a trail that alternately was hard pack, gravel, and sand, but I did it. And my body was both energized and exhausted. But it is a START. And now early to bed!

Very useful post ! To the point! I am also realizing that resolutions might not be for everyone- some people will start and fail and start and fail until it will not become a new habit- so no need for an additional stress- we all have enough of it- new year is for having fun!

I NEVER make new years resolutions. When I want to do something I do it, unless planning is necessary.
When I quit smoking, it was not planned beyond finishing the existing package of cigarettes. I made up my mind this was over, & I refused to buy any more. That was in 1994.

Well said. Your point is correct. Every day is a great day to try and change to become better. NY Day is just as good as any to start. But the other point is this – It’s not about being perfect. it’s about #gettingbettereveryday. People make those NYD resulotions, and when they fall off the wagon on 1/5. They just quit. Give yourself a break. You just had 4-5 days of working towards your new goal and lifestyle. So what? Get back on the horse the next day and get after it. Get better every day! Don’t let 5 bad minutes ruin your day.

I also heard that is takes like 25 days for your mind/body to become happy with the change and make the new routine easier? I not exactly sure how long. But it shows, stick with it and it will get easier in the long term. Thanks

Hi Sam! Thank you so much! #getbettereveryday has become my hastag mantra. I like it because it is about taking action, and as trainer and coach, that is what I try to encourage. Take that action and improve! Yes, it does take about 3 weeks to make something a habit. Habits are easy. So when those resolutions or other things become part of our lifestyle, they become easy too!

So agree, I do not make New Years Resolutions itโs seems to cause me more stress trying to keep it . I just try to make better choices in the new yr and I I donโt then I live with it . Itโs whatever๐

Procrastinating is such a thief of time. So can relate.
But reaching a resolution is absolutely necessary, whether it’s done on the last day of the year, in the middle of the year or on the ist day of the year. It’s absolutely necessary. It’s just that “new year resolutions” are quite popular and trend for at least a month. Regardless pick whatever suits u.

Great post. I’ve not made any for 20 or more years, but from this point on I will make an exception: to reduce the amount of plastic I buy/use and to be more ‘earth conscious.’

I completely agree with you today is the best day for a change because if we wait for opportunities we will be waiting for it all our lives but if we act now opportunities will come for us that is why I started blogging on 28th of December itself because I thought why wait for 1st of January when I can start now.
