Why don’t we say ‘on’ the world?

Have you ever wondered why we say in the world and not on it?

‘North Korea is the craziest country in the world!’

‘Messi is the best football player on Earth!’

I guess living in Earth sounds a little weird. Worms do, we don’t.

When we are talking about the world, are we talking about more than the planet we are pulled towards? To be ‘in’ the world, are we referring to the atmosphere, too? Is the term from a time when we incorporated the heavens and everything we supposedly knew around us in our definition of our world?
