I don’t like religion but I love the buildings!

I’m currently visiting family in Durham, a beautiful city containing a religious history that cannot be ignored. So magical it was decided that scenes from Harry Potter would be filmed here. Only ten minutes away by train from the city of Newcastle, it is by far the most convenient mode of transport to the centre.

I always ensure to take in as much of the scenery on route as it flashes by, there is something about modern technological advancements zooming past historical architecture that fills me with fascination and pride. If only the architects of their day could see the incomprehensible breakneck speeds we consider daily life.

My post Yes, religion has been an inspiration had me thinking of my home, County Durham. Religious buildings can be beautiful and have made this city the tourist spot it is today, yet I do not feel obliged to respect what it represents. Instead I stand up for human creativity and workmanship and what this can achieve. I’m not in awe of God when I see this cathedral, just ourselves!
